Ten Ways To Make Sure You're Always In Demand

Ten Ways To Make Sure You're Always In Demand

1. Look for an area of work that's under-served and become an expert there.

Don't focus on glamour, focus on unmet needs. Find a niche and make it your own.

2. Never depend on a single idea or a single source of demand.

Expect the unexpected. Once you've created your niche, look for others where you can repeat the process. Don't become dependant on one area which could be removed by a single, unexpected event.

3. Relax.

Don't be too intense. People who are in demand are likeable and fun to have around. If you get too obsessive, others will tend to avoid you and chose someone else -- even if they aren't as good as you are in absolute terms.

4. Don't take up too much space.

Leave room for others to express themselves and win a little limelight. If you're ego is too large, and others fear you'll overshadow them, they'll try to keep you away.

5. Be open to other people.

One of the best ways to be in demand is to surround yourself with able, fun people and act as their mentor and the unofficial center of the group. They'll be in demand and will want you there with them.

6. Sustain your confidence.

Confidence counts for more than you think. If you're confident in yourself, others will follow you and look up to you. People like strong leaders: strong as in dominant and trustworthy, not arrogant and domineering. If you display a lack of confidence in yourself, no one else will have any confidence in you either.

7. Stick to your vision and values.

Natural leaders draw others to what they believe and the futures they can see. You'll need a touch of that visionary fire to attract a following. And who will be most in demand? The lone person or the one at the head of a posse of committed supporters?

8. Think big.

Don't limit yourself or let others limit you. If you don't have a clear idea of where you're going and what you're worth, others will decide both without consulting you.

9. Never copy.

Always add your own twist. If you copy others, you'll never stand out. You'll just be one of a whole batch of more or less interchangeable people. That doesn't mean you can't learn from others -- you can and definitely should -- buy always look for something extra or different that you can make your "trademark." To be in demand, you must be unique. Take the common and find a way to make it uncommon.

10. Never look at anything without thinking how you can improve it.

It's great to be happy, but it's discontent that's the driver. Feeling that you ought to be able to do it better than it's done today. The folks in demand are the ones with that little spark of discontent that keeps them pushing to do better, then better again.
